Dido: Life For Rent |

Today's lunch counts as 1 bento.

Neat little pita-esque Sandwich thin, cut in half, silver thing is a wedge of creamy Swiss Laughing Cow cheese, baby carrots, blue berries from the freezer stash, grape tomatoes, turkey and ham slices (rolled up and skewered), and mayo in the penguin container. Tony Chachere's in the bear container to the right.
Counting a bottle of XXX Vitamin Water 10 and a clementine orange, this one comes out to about 350 Calories.
And here's yesterday's .5! ( Read more... ) I'm so happy to be back to Bento-ing! :D

This is my turkey helper lunch from yesterday in my new Miffy box.
I launched a new bento site today called Bento Central, which is sort of like an online bento newspaper. I'd love it if you all would give it a try!

happy new year everyone!!
've been making bentos regularly, and have just gotten lazy w/the picture-taking (however, I am continually amazed and impressed by the quality of bentos shared on here!!). lucky-ducky me, I scored some sweet bento-making lootz for xmas this year, and today was my first day trying them out.
 my husband's bento today.
he had a nice feta-topped salad w/a dressing pig in one half, and purple potatoes, chicken nugget halves, and suuuuper-cute sweet-rice shapes (with wee carrot hearts thanks to my new micro-mini cutters!). oooh, I totally added furikake to his rice after I took this pic, and didn't take a new one. dang. imagine that his flower had a little center of seeds, too. :P
 my lunch today.
looking at it now, the half on the left looks like a weird face. O_O that was not intended, but is neat! I got the other 2 rice shapes from the set of 4, more purple potatoes, and chicken nugget halves in that container. the other half held baby tomatoes, asparagus topped w/more carrot hearts, carrot and cucumber slices, a raspberry, and a lil' swiss cheese cube.
oh ho ho! funny how new tools result in a renewed spirit of creativity! (btw, if you're curious, I have added all the bentos I haven't shared yet over here to this set, just to get 'em up)

| Bento #9: first bento of 2010, first onigiri, and a new box! |
[06 Jan 2010|06:37pm] |
One of my New Year's resolutions is to cook more Asian food. I used to be afraid of making rice, believe it or not, and other than stir frying some vegetables and adding soy sauce, I've never really attempted anything outside my comfort zone of Western cuisine. So here is my first bento to contain onigiri!

They turned out yummy, even if my photography wasn't the best. The one on the left is triangular-shaped and filled with a store-bought furikake. The one on the right is plain.
The top tier contains leftover salmon with a honey mustard glaze and baby carrots. It was a good lunch, but I almost wish I had only packed one onigiri and used the rest of the space for another vegetable or protein.
( This was also my first time using a new bento box! )

Variations on a theme... I wasn't home from work until almost 3:30 am, and my imagination had gone to bed by then. So saved by the fact that my kid loves sausage rolls AND it's one of the things that never seem to be out of stock, even late at night in 7-Eleven.. well.. there you are.. another sausage roll-monster...

| The first bentos of the new year |
[05 Jan 2010|04:57pm] |
Happy New Year everyone! First "business" day of the new year and the kidlet and I had a lunch function at school so I splurged and did two charaben to start the New Year right!
My favorite Sanrio character is Badtz Maru so I made myself an onigiri, encased it in nori and cut out the eyes and mouth out of cheese. Badtz Maru has several sidekicks; the one pictured here is Hana Maru (I think.) who is a molded egg with the face picked out in nori with sesame seeds for eyes. They are surrounded by succotash, Japanese spinach, radish pickles and some gyoza.
( More pics and notes... )

Penny Loafers: Keeping |

I'm Back! :D
Made this one for the boyfriend (in celebration of our 2.25 year anniversary) He says he can't wait until lunch time. :) Left compartment: edamame, baby carrots, cheddar babybel cheese wheel. Right compartment: hard boiled egg with sesame salt, ham, turkey, turkey pepperoni.
And this one is for me! I can't wait for lunch today, either! :D Top: baby carrots, grape tomatoes, Athenos Original Hummus. Bottom: Turkey Pepperoni, hard boiled egg, cheddar babybel cheese wheel, edamame, more grape tomatoes, and a bear container filled with Tony Chachere's for the egg. :D
I need to make a freezer stash of "crustless quiches" (also known as mini-frittatas), and figure out some other stuff to give me variety and quick turnaround. Even though I went grocery shopping yesterday, I stood at my fridge for a long time trying to figure out what to use.
Any suggestions?

| Bento # 681 |
[05 Jan 2010|02:18am] |
So.. spurred on by how the sausage roll looked when I cut it in half, I ended up with some kind of sad looking monster for tomorrow's bento. And then it was obvious to follow up with a ketchup "BOO" on the pasta...

Bento # 681
Sausage rolls. Quail Egg. Peas. Sweet corn. Spicy chicken chunks. Pasta "ears" with ketchup. Carrot and nori as decorations. |

| I Love Octopuses |
[04 Jan 2010|02:37pm] |
So, according to the internet, the proper plural for octopus is "Octopuses. Too bad, I kinda liked the way that "octopi" sounds. Or maybe I just like it because the end sound is "pie." Yum....
Well here it is anyway, my first bento of 2010:

Hot Dog octopuses roasted sweet potatoes babybel cheese Heinz 57 sauce For more info on my bentos and other cooking adventures (including making your own roasted red peppers, and curing bacon) please check out www.smalerie.com, or follow me on Twitter: The_Smalerie

| Bento # 680 |
[03 Jan 2010|09:24pm] |
Well I suppose it's suitable to start the new year with an anniversary. So, quite coincidentally, my Bento # 680 is also the first one of 2010 (whew, 2010 is going to take some time getting used to..)
So I'm celebrating both with a little fireworks bento:

Bento # 680
Black pasta with spices, decorated with parsnip and yellow sweet pepper.
Beef patty wrapped in bacon. Grapes. Brussel sprouts. |

I bought this box while on holiday in Amsterdam - it was quite refreshing to find a lunch box with characters I'd never seen or heard of before :)
Contents are home-made potato salad, a fresh red pepper, sauteed pork fillet slices with black pepper, rosemary and soy sauce, and a chunk of feta cheese.
A pineapple, banana and cranberry smoothie is in the beaker.

Just something simple, as I've never really done it before, and he's an extremely picky eater! He brought it to daycare with him, and the woman that runs it nearly DIED from cute! ^_^

| Pork Guisantes and a New Job! |
[29 Dec 2009|02:14pm] |
I've been using my Ms. Bento a lot because lately I don't get a lunch break at work (call the police!!!) I'm in love that I can open up my hot lunch at my desk instead of eating a room temperature sandwich.
Love it, Love it!
Fortunately, I got a new job!!! I start on Monday and boy, am I thrilled! I will miss my old company and my old co-workers dearly, but I think it is time I moved on. There is stability in my future.
Besides the awesomity of a hot lunch with no time for the microwave...
How many of you like Filipino food? I tried making my own pork guisantes (what? i don't need to buy it?!) and it turned out wonderful.
I got the recipe from www.foodnetwork.com:
Pork Guisantes (Filipino Pork and Peas): Ingredients
- 2 tbsp oil
- 1 onion, sliced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 1/2 lb lean pork, sliced in small pieces
- 1 tbsp soy sauce
- 2 tbsp patis
- 1/2 cup water
- 1 bay leaf
- 3 oz. tomato paste
- 1 pkg (6 oz) frozen peas
- 1 can (3-4 oz) pimientos, sliced
- Salt to taste
DirectionsHeat oil in large skillet. Saute garlic, onions and pork until browned. Add soy sauce, patis, water and bay leaf. Bring to a boil, reduce heat and simmer until pork is tender, about 5-7 minutes. Add tomato paste, peas and pimientos. Simmer for 5 more minutes. Salt to taste.
I didn't know it was so easy. My Mom would be so proud! Here are the left overs in my bento:
 (click for larger image)
Rice; pork guisantes; cucumber, fried eggplant, orange bell peppers, pickled cucumbers.
Congratulations to me for my new job and my new ability to cook Filipino food!
